Switching Banks in Norway — A Practical Checklist

Mobile banking on a phone — most Norwegian account switches are initiated digitally but still require manual follow-up on subscriptions. — NordMint

Norway's banking market is concentrated but competitive. Fees, mobile apps, customer service, and integration with savings products differ enough that switching can save money and reduce friction — if you execute the move cleanly. A partial switch is worse than no switch: missed AvtaleGiro payments and orphaned eFaktura agreements create fees and credit noise.

This checklist assumes you already hold a Norwegian bank account and BankID. If you are new to the system, start with identity setup before closing anything.

Before you switch: compare total cost

List what you actually use:

  • Debit card — some banks charge annual card fees; others bundle free cards with salary accounts.
  • Credit card — often a separate agreement; switching main bank does not automatically move it.
  • Fees — monthly account fees, PDF statements, international transfers.
  • Savings and funds — fondskonto, ASK, and BSU may sit at the same institution by convenience.
  • Mortgage — rarely worth moving for fee savings alone; break costs can dominate.
Factor Weight for most households
Monthly account fee High if you keep low balances
App quality and support High for daily users
Mortgage break fees Often decisive against switching
Fund platform fees Medium for active investors
Branch access Low unless you handle cash often

Finanstilsynet supervises banks regardless of brand; safety of deposits in authorized institutions follows EU deposit guarantee rules implemented in Norway. Switch for service and price, not fear of insolvency among licensed banks.

Step 1: Open the new account without closing the old one

Run accounts in parallel for at least one full salary cycle, preferably two months. This overlap catches quarterly bills and annual insurance renewals you forgot about.

When opening:

  • Order new BankID activation if required by the new bank's onboarding flow.
  • Set up Nettbank and verify domestic transfer limits.
  • Confirm your account number (BBAN) and IBAN for international use.

Step 2: Redirect income

Give your employer HR the new account number. Norwegian payroll systems usually update within the next pay period, but confirm receipt of the first deposit before touching the old account.

If you receive NAV benefits, Skatteetaten refunds, or Statens pensjonskasse payments, update each portal separately — they do not follow your employer automatically.

Step 3: Migrate AvtaleGiro and eFaktura

This is where most switches fail.

AvtaleGiro authorizes direct debits from your account. Each creditor holds a mandate tied to a specific account. When you close the old account, debits bounce.

eFaktura is electronic invoicing through your bank's interface. The invoice arrives in Nettbank; approval triggers payment.

Action list:

  1. Export or screenshot active AvtaleGiro agreements from old Nettbank.
  2. Log into each service provider (power, mobile, insurance, gym, streaming) and register the new account or re-authorize AvtaleGiro.
  3. Re-register eFaktura recipients at the new bank — look for "eFaktura" or "Registrer utsteder" in the menu.
  4. For Autogiro tied to loans, contact the lender directly.

Allow 14–30 days for some providers to process mandate changes.

Step 4: Update card subscriptions

Netflix, Spotify, and app stores often charge a card, not AvtaleGiro. If your debit card number changes, update merchant vaults. Credit cards billed separately need their own payment account review.

Step 5: Move remaining products deliberately

Product Switch complexity
BSU Usually stay or open new; check tax continuity
ASK / fondskonto Transfer securities or sell and rebuy — tax implications
Boliglån High — appraisal, fees, new credit assessment
Safe deposit / vault Physical visit

Finanstilsynet does not prohibit moving investments, but ASK transfers must follow tax rules to preserve the account's status. Consult Skatteetaten guidance or a tax adviser before transferring holdings between wrappers.

Step 6: Build a verification calendar

For two months after migration, check both accounts weekly:

  • Any debits still hitting the old account?
  • Any eFaktura still routed to old Nettbank?
  • Payroll and recurring transfers complete?

Set a calendar reminder before closing the old account to download annual transaction exports for tax records if needed.

Step 7: Close the old account properly

Do not zero the balance and walk away. Formally close the account through the bank to release mandates and avoid dormant-account fees.

Before closure:

  • Transfer remaining balance.
  • Cancel linked credit lines you no longer want.
  • Confirm no pending cheques or delayed debits (rare but possible with insurance).

Keep PDF statements covering the full tax-relevant year if Skatteetaten questions deductions tied to payments from that account.

BankID when switching banks

BankID is not "owned" by one bank, but enrollment flows differ. You may hold BankID through multiple banks; some users keep a minimal account at a former bank temporarily to retain a backup activation path. Check current BankID rules on bankid.no — policy evolves.

When switching is not worth it

  • Mortgage penalty clauses exceed years of account fee savings.
  • Employer-linked payroll packages require a specific bank.
  • Concentrated investments where in-kind transfer is impossible without triggering gains you cannot cash-flow.

Sometimes negotiating fees at your current bank works. Norwegian retail banking responds to churn threats more than many customers expect.

Privacy and data

Closing an account does not erase historical data held by the bank under legal retention rules. Read the privacy notice if you care how transaction history is stored.

Digital-only vs traditional banks when switching

Neobank-style entrants and legacy Sparebank networks differ on branch access, cash deposit support, and mortgage bundling. Switching daily account to digital while keeping mortgage at legacy bank is common — accept two-app life or migrate mortgage only if break-even math clear.

Notifications and fraud during transition

Dual-account period increases mis-click risk — old account number saved in browser autofill paying wrong invoice. Disable saved beneficiaries on old Nettbank after migration. Finanstilsynet reports phishing spikes after major bank marketing campaigns — verify SMS links during switch stress.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should I run two accounts?

Minimum one full month after your salary lands in the new account; two months is safer if you pay annual bills or have complex AvtaleGiro setups.

Will switching hurt my credit score?

Norway does not have a US-style universal credit score, but unpaid bills and collection cases register with Kredittopplysning agencies. Bounced AvtaleGiro after closing an old account can create negative entries. Clean migration avoids this.

Can my employer refuse to pay a new account?

Employers must pay to an account you designate if it is a valid Norwegian account. Delays usually reflect admin lag, not refusal.

Do I need to visit a branch?

Fully digital banks may onboard remotely. Traditional banks sometimes require in-person ID for certain products. Mortgages and large cash deposits still often involve branches.

What about joint accounts?

Both holders must agree to closure. Migrate shared bills and update mandates together to avoid one partner paying from a closed account.
